The very process of asphalt milling is certainly one of the most common forms of asphalt reconstruction. You see it all the time, even if you aren’t sure what you’re looking at.

Before New Asphalt is Laid

Before the new asphalt is laid on the surface (highway or parking lot), you often see (or feel) vertical “grooves” that begin and end with a bump. That is the milling in process.

The Process of Milling Asphalt

The first step of milling features a machine that scrapes off the top layer of old asphalt using a professional milling drum that is set to a desired depth. The asphalt that is scraped off is then drawn through the milling machine to a long conveyor belt.

The milled asphalt is then placed into dump trucks where we then transport to an asphalt plant. The millings are recycled and used to create new asphalt. It’s a lot like recycling of the old road to make a new one. Once the desired area is milled, it is carefully cleaned and prepared for the new layer of smooth asphalt.

Benefits of Milling:

These are some of the benefits of asphalt milling:

  • Milling saves money on the project. It’s one of the more cost-effective ways to reconstruct an asphalt surface.
  • Easier on the environment. Milled asphalt is recycled (see above) in such a manner that the end result is new asphalt.
  • Faster project completion times. Not only do we mill in order to resurface your area, but we also use asphalt milling to recede project time and provide you with a quicker asphalt paving solution.
